EVERY PRAYER SHOULD BE:
(Our Father, may your name be kept holy...)
Because God is our Father, we don’t need to try to impress Him with our prayers. God is not moved by big words, long prayers, and mindless repetitions.
The goal of every prayer is to know God more - not to get more from Him. Prayer is just as much about listening to God as it is speaking to Him. We get to know God better when we give Him a chance to speak.
Approach God as a Father - He is someone who loves you unconditionally and knows you more than you know yourself.
(Your will be done… Give us today...)
Seek God’s will in every area of your life; don’t close off any decisions from Him. Let Him speak freely to all of your choices, relationships, and desires.
In each prayer, recommit to Jesus’ Lordship in your life. Admit the ways you haven’t lived for Him and surrender your heart to Him over and over again.
Recognize your own needs and submit them to God. We were made to live in humble dependence on Him. We should never feel any shame to admit to God that we need something. He delights in providing for His children.
(Forgive us our sins as we have forgiven… Don’t let us yield to temptation...)
To truly know God, we must not hide behind the mask of who we think we are supposed to be. We must come to God as we really are and be willing to let Him change us! As we confess our sins to God, His forgiveness will change our hearts.
Our debt to God is infinite, and our prayers should reflect that awareness. It’s out of this knowledge that we are to forgive others who have hurt us. As you connect to God through prayer, release all bitterness, unforgiveness, and envy you may have towards others.
Recognize the spiritual battle you are in; be watchful of the enemy and his schemes. As you seek God’s help, you will walk in His victory over your sinful desires and the enemy of your soul.
The Model Prayer serves as a pattern and not a prescription. Our prayers shouldn’t be memorized and mechanically spoken. Use the Model prayer as an example to help you connect to God.
Set a particular time each day to pray - a time where you can focus on God with the least amount of distractions.
If you're feeling distracted or overwhelmed, simply ask God to help you focus on Him.
Find a place to pray that helps you connect with God. This could be a quiet room, a car ride, outside, etc.
Don’t beat yourself up if you fall out of routine.
It’s okay to tell God how you really feel.
Find another believer to pray with periodically.
Keep a running list of people and things to pray for.
Include the reading of God’s Word with your prayer time. This will help you focus your prayers on things that matter most.
When God speaks to you or answers your prayers, write it down and keep a record of it. This will build your faith and refresh you during the times God feels silent.
